How to find
the key of a song.

Three ways that work, from fastest to most reliable, plus the cases where each one fails. You don't need a theory background for any of them.

The short version.

Drop the file into a key detector and read the result. That covers most tracks in a few seconds. When detection isn't confident, find the home note by ear: hum the note the song keeps resolving to, find it on a keyboard, then check whether the third above it sounds bright (major) or dark (minor).

/ 01 — The fast way

Drop the file in a detector.

A key detector listens to the audio frame by frame, measures how much energy lands on each of the twelve pitch classes, and matches that distribution against the 24 keys. The confidence score matters more than people give it credit for. A clean melodic loop will read 90%+ and you can trust it. A dense mix with detuned vocal layers might read 60%, which really means "this is my best guess, check it by ear." A detector that names a key for a drum loop without hedging is making it up. Ours returns "no key" instead. Annoying, but it's the true answer.

One practical tip: analyse the section you plan to use, not the full track. Intros and breakdowns often sit on a different chord than the drop, and some songs change key outright between sections.

/ 02 — By ear

Find the home note.

Every key has a tonic, the note the song keeps coming home to. Your ear already hears it. You just have to name it.

Step 01

Play the song and hum along until you land on the note that feels finished, the one where the melody could stop and nothing would feel missing. It's usually the last note of a phrase, and almost always the bass note under the final chord. Not sure you've got it? Hum your candidate over a different section of the song. If it still fits, you found home.

Step 02

Find that note on a keyboard or a tuner while humming it. That note is your key candidate. If you land on E, the song is in E something.

Step 03

Decide major or minor by playing the third: four semitones up for major, three for minor. Play both against the track and keep the one that doesn't clash. If it sounds bright and settled, you're in major.

This takes a minute the first few times and becomes nearly instant with practice. It's also the method that still works when software doesn't, which is why it's worth learning even if you use a detector daily.

/ 03 — In your DAW

Use what you already have.

Most modern DAWs will tell you the key of audio you drop in. Ableton Live tunes samples in Simpler and shows detected pitch. FL Studio's Edison reports key on detection. Logic reads the key of Apple Loops and flex-pitched audio. If the song is already in your project, check there before reaching for anything else.

The DAW route has one gap: it works per file, one at a time, after you've imported it. If the real question is "which of the samples I own are in F minor," per-file detection doesn't scale to a library of thousands. / 04 — Where every method fails

Some audio has no key.

Drums and percussion carry no stable pitch, so "what key is this drum loop" usually has no answer. Noise sweeps, foley, and heavily distorted textures are the same. A detector that confidently names a key for these is pattern-matching on accidents.

Two harder cases are worth knowing about. Songs that borrow chords from outside their scale (very common in jazz, R&B, and anything sampled from either) can pull a detector toward a related key, typically the relative major or minor of the true answer. And older recordings are often slightly off concert pitch, so the detected key can sit between two names. In both cases, trust the by-ear check from method 02 over any single number.

If you're mixing rather than sampling, key names matter less than key relationships. The Camelot wheel renames the 24 keys into codes arranged so neighbours mix cleanly, which is the version of this problem DJs actually need solved. And since key is only half of a match, the tempo is the other half.
