How the pitch shifter
works.

Method: STFT phase-vocoder via Signalsmith Stretch · Built by Sample Vault · v1

The same pitch-shift the desktop app runs when you transpose a sample to your project key, in your browser.

/ 01Frequency-domain shifting

We slice your audio into overlapping short windows and shift the frequency content of each window up or down by the number of semitones you set. The windows get stitched back together at the original spacing — same length as what you put in.

/ 02Tempo preserved

Tempo is independent. The whole point of phase-vocoded pitch shifting is that you change pitch without speeding up or slowing down. A 4-bar loop stays a 4-bar loop; a 2-second one-shot stays 2 seconds.

/ 03Honest failure modes

Transients (kick attacks, snare cracks, plucks) get smeared a little — that's the price you pay for keeping the tempo locked. Formants aren't preserved either, so heavy shifts on vocals will sound chipmunked or growly. ±3 semitones is musically safe; ±7 is usable; ±12 is a creative effect.

/ 04Fully local

The file never leaves your machine. Once it's loaded, the rest runs offline. Useful for unreleased material, label stems, and anything you can't put through a third-party service.

/ Across your library

From one file
to fifty thousand.

Transposing one sample is easy. Transposing every sample in your library on the fly so it lines up with your project key — without re-bouncing — is the desktop app. Same engine, working across every folder you point it at.
