How the volume booster
works.

Method: linear gain + soft-knee peak limiting at −0.3 dBFS · Built by Sample Vault · v1

Gain staging, a limiter, and honest level metering. The whole chain runs in your browser.

/ 01Gain staging

The slider applies plain linear gain: every sample gets multiplied by the same factor, so +6 dB roughly doubles the perceived level and +18 dB is a serious push. The peak and RMS readouts show exactly how much headroom your file had and where it ends up, so you can boost by the numbers instead of guessing.

/ 02The limiter

A soft-knee limiter sits after the gain with its ceiling at −0.3 dBFS. Anything below the knee passes through untouched. Peaks that would overshoot get rounded progressively toward the ceiling instead of being chopped flat, so the output never hard-clips no matter how far you push the slider.

/ 03Why clipping sounds bad

Hard clipping flattens the top of the waveform into square edges, which adds harsh high harmonics your ear reads as crackle. The soft limiter trades that for gentler saturation, but there is no free lunch: heavy boosts still trade loudness for distortion. Watch the "peaks rounded" figure. Near zero is transparent; whole percents you will hear.

/ 04Fully local

Your file never leaves your machine. The page loads once and runs offline thereafter. Useful for unreleased material, label stems, and anything you can't put through a third-party service.

Sample Vault is a desktop sample browser that analyzes your whole library locally: key, tempo, loudness, character. This page is one of its free in-browser tools, built from the same audio plumbing.
